I recently received a coupon in the mail. Probably because I had signed up for some rewards program at the register to get 10% off my purchase with the small caveat that I would be dooming thousands of trees to afterlives of junk mail. I hate when I do that.

But I thought to myself, “Huh. 20%. That’s not too bad. I could probably use that. Say, on some toys. Or diapers. Or formula. Or my favorite Ameda milk storage bags. Or a new Aprica stroller, or even a Baby Jogger. Maybe I could put it towards that BOBgear bike trailer. Or a Bugaboo carrier. Maybe a Cybex car seat. Or a Mamas & Papas high chair. Or a Peg Perego double wide stroller, now that we’ve got two little ones. On the other hand, I could use it for myself – maybe a new Playstation, or that new Mario Brothers game, or even a TV. Maybe an iPod for all the running I’ll be doing with my new double wide stroller. Or a netbook (once I find out just what that is). I could get a little RobotGalaxy rover for Matthew. Or, he might not like that, so maybe I should get him a regular old gift card instead. But, of course, there’s the off chance that I might get preggo again, and then I really ought to have some new maternity clothes handy. Of course, any of these things ought to be purchased with care, so maybe I should just get the discount on a Buyer Protection plan. But that would be silly, because 20% off of a whole photo studio has got to be a huge savings, dollars-wise. And I think they have those in stock at the R’Us. Of course, I could just call my order in, or special order something that my local store doesn’t carry. Something that might require assembly. Or, I could rent a breast pump, because doesn’t everyone need one of those, just for, you know, a couple days at a time here and there? Of course, the greatest savings on all this stuff might actually be on the delivery fee, or the shipping and handling. All of this could really add up.”

And the list goes on and on (and on!).

But then, I happened to turn the card over, and discovered the fine print.

All my dreams. Shattered. That coupon really is only worth its cash value.

This is Helén.

In addition to being a very nice person with a winning smile, she teaches Vinyasa Flow Yoga a few blocks from the barn. For those of you who have taken classes from Helén before, she has a new studio about twenty paces from her old one. Look for the barn at the end of Artist’s Alley (just off Cannon and Cross Streets).

For those of you who have not taken classes from Helén, you are not quite as happy, flexible, or in touch with your chakras as you could otherwise be. Take it from me, the bumbling clod, who stepped into one of Helén’s classes last fall only to find myself transformed into the graceful, elegant creature you know today. Such remarkable transformation can only be enacted under the guidance of a trained master.

Helén is such an outstanding teacher that even a baby can master even the most difficult techniques. For example, Kato knew nothing of yoga at 3:00 this afternoon.

With a little help from Helén, by 3:15, he was performing even the most advanced moves with ease!

To further support my point, Helén can even teach a surly two-year old how to do Yoga.

Alden was quick to master downward facing dog.

And have you ever seen a finer example of this move (the name of which is too complex for me to even share with you)?

In all seriousness, Helén is a truly gifted teacher: kind, patient, and passionate about what she does. I’ve taken four of her classes already and am looking forward to the start of a new one next week.

If you’ve enjoyed yoga in the past or have ever been curious about trying it, check out Helén’s site and give it a try. She still has a few spots left for the fall (going quickly, as babies all over town are clamoring to improve their posture).

In twelve short weeks, you could look like this:

I have been waiting and waiting to post the winner here to give you last-minute stragglers a chance to win some art. Given that there were only 15 comments to choose from (4 of which originated in the barn) your odds were darn good. That being said, I have to say that it was not an easy choice. I really wish I had 15 (er, ahem, 11, rather) to give away, but I only have one. I guess I need to be more prolific, and then equally sloppy when it comes time to spray on the Super 77. There’s hope yet for the rest of you.

For a refresher, here’s the item in question:

I chose the winner because of her beautifully written description of how this piece feels like a where and not just a what. It reminded me of a place I must want to be, since I did, after all, draw it myself. I will have to make my own way to Penobscot Bay to have a look, and see if it feels the same way to me, or if it is something you have to have steeped in for years to feel.

And now, drumroll please, the winner is:
Ms. Abby, who wrote:

Your image reminds me of the blues and greens that I delight in when I am on the coast of Maine. The islands of Penobscot Bay line up one after another, floating between water and sky; with all the seaweed and rocks and trees and fogbanks, those islands sometimes seem to fade into a series of washes, lines, blotches, and curves. I love these hills, these knobbly and almost whimsical tree-covered lumps, and wish I could always linger here where land and water meet. I have this white stairwell that is just begging for some color on the walls to juxtapose against forest and hills, just inland from the water, and that would be perfect.

I would treasure that drawing as a reminder of this place, because you have abstractly captured so much of the joy of landscape that I adore, even though you’ve never seen it. Your piece strikes me as a perfect blend of whimsy and high design, so I could dress it up quite nicely but I could also put it next to all my well-loved (read: not so new) furnishings.

It’s a damn fine piece of art, and I think it would look mighty handsome at my house.

Please contact us with directions on the where to, Abby!
And please note, for the record, that I think it would look mighty handsome at my house, too.

Congratulations!
Today is your day!
You’re off to great places!
You’re off and away!

These are the opening lines to Dr. Suess’s “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” which is Alden’s current favorite, which she (and I) have memorized pretty well. They seemed more appropriate than the opening lines to “The Gulag Archipelago,” which is the other book she’s been reading lately, and which I haven’t memorized quite as well.

Yesterday we were driving Eastern Shore backroads and came along the sign for this fine establishment.

The question is, what wares, exactly, is Twinny’s Sun & Guns peddling? My mind races with theories, but lest I pollute the waters, will hold them in check for now. The person who offers the most plausible explanation (in my humble judgment) wins a copy of either The Vast Sahara (in which the sun plays a prominent role) or Let me Count the Ways (which contains various guns, some of which are fired).

No fair using Google to come up with the actual answer, which will almost surely be less interesting than whatever scenarios our unhinged imaginations might inspire. And come to think of it, it’s probably a stretch to think that the Sun & Guns has developed a comprehensive web site. But perhaps I do not give them enough credit?

The winner will be announced on Wednesday. In the mean time, I’ll do my best to divine the actual business plan of Twinny’s Sun and Guns, whatever it might be.

I play many roles for Idiots’Books. Of course, I am the writer. That’s what it says on the title page of every book. I’m also the manager, keeping track of the to-do lists and making sure we stay on schedule. At various other times, I am the bookbinder, the art director, and the heavy box carrier. Yesterday, however, I had the misfortune to engage in one of the least glamorous aspects of my life as Robbi’s collaborator.

Robbi is cooking on a new children’s book, and needed a model for her protagonist’s particular gait. Enter Matthew, in his supplicant role. She says “Jump!” and I jump. She says “Bend over a bit more!” and I bend over a bit more.

She says, “Ok, now twist to the left and lift one foot up, but point it ‘strong,’ not like a little girl would point it. NOT LIKE A LITTLE GIRL WOULD POINT IT, I SAID!”

Apparently, when I hold my arms parallel to my shoulders while bending them at the elbow while putting my head down while turning to the left and pointing one leg, I point that leg like a little girl would point it. And apparently, this is unacceptable to Robbi.

So if (or should I say “when”) you see the illustrations of the protagonist in Robbi’s new children’s book and see that he has a leg that points like a little girl’s, you’ll know why.

And if Robbi ever approaches you about modeling for her, I’ll know why you’re running as quickly as you can in the opposite direction.

We were in Baltimore yesterday, I to show my face at work and then go to a ballgame and Robbi to buy some art supplies and spend the evening with friends. While she was downtown, Robbi made a point of stopping by the newsstand to see if the September issue of Urbanite magazine was yet available.

And why does Robbi have such an interest in the cover of this month’s Urbanite? Because she illustrated it! (Those of you who know me know how much it pains me to use exclamation points, and yet, the occasion seems to call for nothing less.)

The September issue is education-themed. I think I can refrain from explaining the significance of the apple.

In addition to the cover, Robbi illustrated an article that discusses the progress that has been made under the current superintendent of Baltimore schools while describing the challenges that still lie ahead. Be sure to get a copy or read the article online. For now, here’s a peek at the eye candy.

Urbanite’s pages are oversized and the layouts are beautifully designed. As much as you might be enjoying the image above, you really need to track down a paper copy of the magazine and turn to page 40 to get the full effect.

While Robbi was lost in her personal reverie, Alden, Grandpa John, and I were watching the Orioles best the Red Sox. It was a beautiful night for a ball game, if a bit hot.

Not a bad day, all around.

Hello folks. This morning, Josh (award-winning author/wry sonovabich) posed some interesting questions on the Creative Pairs Facebook page.

1) Which creative pairs do you find most compelling? Your cases may be historical or contemporary, high culture or lowbrow, famous or obscure. I’ve done much of my early research in the arts, so I’m especially interested now in pairs from science, tech, business, sports, and so on.

2) Can you suggest a *form*of relationship that probably escapes most of us? In many fields (every field?) there are hidden collaborators in positions that insiders know well, but outsiders remain ignorant of. Directors have their DPs, pro surfers their board shapers, judges their clerks. Can you think of other, surprising examples?

Of course, Robbi and I are interested in your thoughts along these lines, but should you care to share them, why not head over to the group page so that the folks over there can benefit from your wisdom? There’s already an interesting thread unspooling. Dare to be illuminated.

Josh sends his thanks to those of you who have already joined the conversation.

A few weeks ago, we were up in Stockbridge presenting at the Creativity Seminar at Austen Riggs. In the audience was a rather nice person who happened to be a librarian from Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. She was sufficiently taken with our work to deem it worth collecting, so on behalf of Yale, she purchased the entire back catalog.

Honored though we were to be deemed worthy of perpetual entombment in this lovely building…

…we were left with the somewhat daunting task of tracking down copies of our 33 books, albums, posters, broadsides, recombining cards sets, and other sundries.

But motivated by the lure of immortality (we figure that Yale’s not going away any time soon), we amassed the entire collection, which looked like this:

And now we get to think of our books resting comfortably in stacks that look like this:

Or possibly not. Possibly Yale reserves these lovely stacks for the works of Samuel Johnson and Alexander Pope and has an unlovable closet for the unpolished utterance of small barn-based presses.

But we can dream.

Mostly, we are pleased to know that if the barn and all our hard drives are destroyed by an unexpected comet, there will be a complete collection of our work somewhere that we can visit some day.

Note: the lovely photographs of Beineke were taken by a fellow named Richard Cheek. Think of him with fondness and respect as you admire his work.

Note: If you happen to be the representative of a major American research university and find yourself freshly inspired to purchase the entire Idiots’Books back catalog, we might be able to work something out. But like the pretty girl who invites you to the dance even though you’re undersized, pimply, and bereft of self confidence, Yale will ever and always be first in our hearts.
