I recognize that this might not be the most appropriate place for this particular celebrity sighting, but TMZ.com apparently doesn’t take submissions without photographic evidence.

So, when we were in DC for AWP, we had to stop and get gas. For any of you who know DC, we were in Chevy Chase. The price differential in gas between Chestertown and Chevy Chase was 43ยข. This was foolishness. We were grumpy at having missed our more economically sensible refueling opportunities. We pulled in next to a car that was significantly swankier than our lumbering white space shuttle. And a guy who looked like Tony Kornheiser was there, filling up his tank.

For those of you who don’t know who Tony Kornheiser is, don’t feel bad. You are probably not alone. See below:

Tony Kornheiser is an announcer on ESPN’s PTI (Pardon The Interruption). I know this because even though I am an absolute disinterested party when it comes to sports, I actually enjoy the show when it comes on. It turns out sports isn’t so unbearable when you only have 2 minutes to get bored.

There was great debate as to whether it was really Tony Kornheiser. My argument was that he was in DC, driving a car with DC plates, pumping his own gas, and paying cash – I figured DC was not a hotbed of filming for ESPN, and if he was just in town for a special event, he wouldn’t be driving a car with DC plates, and he would be paying with the company credit card (I am a whiz at constructing fake explanatory narratives in 2 seconds or less). Turns out, the show actually does tape in DC and he actually lives in Chevy Chase. So it really was him. We were unsure (and star-struck) enough that we figured the guy wouldn’t want to be bothered by a couple semi-fans (though I wish I had told him it’s the only sports show I will watch), so no photos or anything. And that’s the story.

Upon further reflection, our venn diagram could look like this:

So, Christian and Nifer, I hope you’re reading. Pretty cool, huh?

Actually, to be more accurate, I realize that our venn diagram should look like this:

Such was our brush with the enormous and amazing fame of Tony Kornheiser. I look forward to drawing the diagrams for the time we run into Lady Gaga in the public restroom at the Sbarro on the New Jersey Turnpike.
