It is 9:03am on January 1, and Robbi and I are already 1/365th of the way to accomplishing one of our goals for 2013.

As threatened, we are going to draw every day this year, using the book 712 More Things to Draw from Chronicle Books. We each have a copy.

Before breakfast—before anything—I took out my book and set to work, determined not to botch this resolution on day one.

Today’s prompt was “envelope.” I chose a worthy model.

And here’s my drawing. Robbi described it as “elegant.” Which might be shorthand for “awful.”

Moments later, Robbi jumped into the fray.

Her drawing is neither elegant nor awful. I like how it contains a hint of intrigue.

Noticing fun unfolding of which he was no part, Kato proclaimed his interest in drawing an envelope of his own.

Robbi declared it “magnificent,” which is way better than “elegant,” no?

Of course, the daily drawing is not a competition, but an exercise. A process. A project. An experiment. I have no idea what the coming year will bring, but I hope that it ends with a book full of drawings.

I know that a handful of you tracked down a copy of this book and are doing drawings of your own. If anyone has an envelope to share, feel free to send it my way.

Happy New Year, everyone.
