Eight months ago today, August arrived, a strange little raisin we barely knew.
Now he is the Woggler, or Augie, or Hachi (Japanese for 8, or “the eighth month, or “August”).
Now he pulls himself up, drags himself along, and puts everything and anything in his mouth. Now he has something to say.
Now he is one of us, one-fifth of a whole, and we just can’t imagine life without him.
Happy eight months, little buddy.

I want to steal him and bring him home with me. I feel like you all would notice, though, and would even object.
Hm. Let’s make a deal. I’ll take the cats if I can also take August. How does that sound?
Oh Don – you are playing with fire. The offer of taking the cats might actually win you a baby. Matthew and I are in heated negotiations now…
I might have to fight you on that, Don. In fact, I could beat you to it. You may be cleverer than me, but I live in Chestertown! Nya ah ahhhhhhh!
Alternate offer: you make another baby, give that one to me before you get too attached, and I’ll take the cats now.
Either way, I’ll fight Jenifer if it comes to that.
Don: We’re getting so close. How about this:
You take the cats now.
Seriously, Don – 9 months of carrying a baby for you is looking pretty good next to seven more years of “missing the cat litter.”
Well, the offer stands. And Matthew – No. Cats and baby, or no cats. Although I would also accept Kato or Alden. Or Doug the Baker.
Don,
Considering the “heated negotiations” and all, my guess is there will be another baby. When that happens, they might be very willing to give one up without your having to take the damn cats. Unless you like cats, (ugh), I would hold out a bit longer.
