We are still on the tundra and will be for another week. But here is another post from the vaults, a glimpse at what we might be seeing and doing today. We’re not in the majestic part of Alaska. In the far distance, on clear days, we can see the hazy outline of a snowcapped mountain, but we are on the tundra, near a bluff that looks over the water. There is nowhere to throw away junk, so it sits around in heaps. There is no Home Depot, so houses are made by hand with materials brought in by barge or salvaged from other settings. The result is a beautiful Frankenstein mix of old and new, a patchwork of rust and peeled paint, the textures of wear and persistence with plenty of heart thrown in.

It’s a place I love to be, my second home.

Happy reading.
