Several of you have been asking when you can sign up for Bobbledy Books. The answer is: soon. We’re just trying to iron out a few final details on the Website, and as soon as we do, we’ll go live. The hope is to launch on Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
A few of you have been asking what Bobbledy even is. I guess we’ve done a pretty bad job of explaining what we’re thinking. Here’s the plan.
Bobbledy Books is a subscription-based book and music club for kids. Club members get a bunch of stuff in the mail throughout the year:
3 books with words by me and illustrations by Robbi
1 book that Robbi and I start but leave unfinished for club members to complete with their own words and pictures
1 book published by one of the kids on the club (basically, any club member who wants to can send us their finished version of the unfinished book; we’ll pick one to publish and send to all the other kids in the club)
1 album of children’s music by our amazing friend Drew Bunting
1 birthday card
1 funny-looking, five headed crayon
Here is the crayon:
We call it the Bobbledy Blob.
All of the above will be sent in outrageously colored envelopes with a fun, kid-oriented letter.
In addition to the above, every day, we’ll post to the Bobbledy blog. There will be plenty of stories and pictures about family, creativity, and books. There will be creative prompts, to which we’ll hope kids will respond and then send us their work for posting on the blog. There will be opportunities to ask us questions and get responses. There will be occasional contests with prizes. We’re hoping that the blog will become an interactive community of kids and parents who are interested in making stuff and sharing it with others.
Our main goal is to get kids excited about books, excited about writing and drawing, excited about music, and excited about getting stuff in the mail.
We figure that if we’re excited enough, the club members will come along for the ride.
People have asked what age of kid this is for. The three books by Robbi and me will be for 3-7 year-olds. The book that kids finish should be appealing to anyone who likes to write and draw. We imagine that kids as old as 12 (or even older if they have managed to retain their imaginations) will enjoy completing the book. As for the music, Drew’s lyrics are smart and hilarious and will be appealing to anyone who takes the time to listen. Kids will love dancing to the beat and adults will love the humor. We imagine Bobbledy as something that a family will subscribe to, with a little something for everyone, from the toddlers to tweens to mom and dad.
That’s how it works, in a nutshell. The new site has a nice illustrated slideshow that says the above a lot better. Speaking of which, if you want to be notified as soon as the Bobbledy site goes live, be sure to sign up for our mailing list. We’re going to be offering some nice giveaways to the first people to join the club.
And that’s it. If you have additional questions, just drop me an email.
