I found this photo the other day, and it made me stop and see that things have changed.

The length of Alden’s hair, for one. And there’s a different baby in the high chair now.

Whenever I’m out at the grocery store with a shopping cart full of kids, older people stop me and say, with wistful eyes, that “It goes so fast,” and “They grow before you know it.”

I’m usually so mired in the haste and noise and clamor of the current kid-filled moment to connect with the idea that it will ever be anything but my present reality.

But then I see a picture like that, a window into something that is already past, and I see how true it must be. I guess I won’t really know it until it’s already too late.
