Lately, Alden has been angling for bunk beds, galvanized by fond memories of a sleepover with her best friend Garcia this past summer in Williamstown.
While bunk beds are in the long-term plan, we have to wait until August is old enough to share the bottom bunk with Kato. Their 8′ x 8′ bedroom is simply too small for both bunk bed and crib.
Does this ironclad logic sway Alden? Not even a little. In fact, she is waging a subtle campaign, dropping hints of the virtues of bunk beds, conspicuous object lessons for me to find around the house.
Ah, Monkey and Monkey, resting so happily together, bunk bed style. Doesn’t that look nice, Papa? Doesn’t that look fun, Papa? Wouldn’t you be a much better papa if you got us bunk beds now, Papa?
The dawn of manipulation is here. I’m going to have to up my game.

If you want bunk beds you are welcome to have mine. They are very well made — Alden has climbed on them so she may remember. I’d be more than happy to part with them and even happier for Alden, Kato, and August to have them. Seriously! Let me know.
This is an incredibly tempting offer. Thanks so much. We will have to stop by and measure it. In their tiny, tiny bedroom, it all comes down to inches.
Please feel free to come measure. They haven’t been of use to me for years. Or I can measure and let you know! But probably you’d want to see them, too.
