Here’s my girl. For five and a half years, I’ve been watching her hair grow steadily longer.
Her unruly mane is a defining characteristic, an emblem of her wildness.
Robbi has trimmed her bangs from time to time, but the rest has been growing since the day she was born.
But change is inevitable, of course. Lately, Alden has been wondering what it might be like to live with shorter locks. And so Robbi gathered Alden’s hair in a pony tail.
And took out the barber’s shears.
And five years of growth was gone in a moment. A little part of my heart broke…
But another part awakened.
Robbi did some layering, meant to maximize the sass.
The results? A whole new girl.
Ready for a whole new year.
School starts on Thursday. I wonder if her teachers will know her.
Suddenly, she is so much older, so much wiser, so much closer to leaving for college.
Here’s what I know: short or long, five or 15, she’ll always be my little girl.

Oh! I’m so glad I saw that hair one more time a few weeks ago. Was jealous of the curls! She looks adorable of course now with it shorter and layered. Anna’s hair has also never been cut and I think I will cry a bit when we do–knowing the ends of her hair are/were with her since birth. Sigh. They grow up..
This subtraction was an addition. Adorable!
The fab do reminds me of Amélie!!! One of my all time favorite movies, characters and favorite hair cuts. And Alden sure seems to have that special kind of quirky Amélie sass to boot! (P.s. I always admire Robbi’s deft sheering skills, well done!)
Sheering, shearing…you know what I meant! ; )
Robbi — what a great job! Alden’s new haircut is spectacular. Will you cut my hair if my stylist is not available? Tell her I think it looks so, so pretty!
Yes, yes, she reminds me of Amelie too. Darling!
