Here’s a common scenario. It’s just before bedtime. Alden is ready to go down. We’re moments away from sweet parental liberation, but—
The indispensable binkie is nowhere to be found. We look in the diaper bag and under the couch or next to the toy chest or on top of the bookcase to no avail. We never seem to be able to find a binkie when we need it.
But then, yesterday, binkies started coming out of the woodwork, appearing wherever we looked. Like cicadas in the 17th year or those giant sea turtles when they come out of the sea all at once to lay their eggs, the binkies arrived en masse, and suddenly we have a sort of binkie gridlock on the kitchen counter.
We don’t know how to explain the convergence or what to do about it.
But I know from experience, they will be scattered and missing again by the time Alden goes to bed tonight.

I know exactly what you mean. We deal with this on a regular basis. Stella has pacifiers that have caps on them so they stay clean when she’s not using them. Sometimes we have an abundance of caps, sometimes an abundance of pacifiers. Sometimes both. And then there are those strange, mystical times when they all disappear. I think the cats may be messing with us.
Normal hijinks from the “monsters”.
Only the stuff changes. Binkies, car keys… sometimes it’s pens. For me now, it’s 2.00 reading glasses. After a while you just learn to go with the flow. If your stuff appears when needed, it’s nice. If not, you just know the monsters are at play.
Do your kids have “blankies”???
Don’t EVER EVER lose the blankie.
We all went to DC one day many winters ago and when Jessie put Rosie in her carseat in the back, the blankie fell out and was LEFT on 4th street. It was rush hour. We got all the way to the end of New York ave when we figured it out.
I went back. Nuff said…
