I was first inspired to go visit Iceland when I saw this promotional travel video. Doesn’t Iceland look fun???
Inspired by Iceland Video from Inspired By Iceland on Vimeo.
Actually, that is a lie. I was first inspired to go visit Iceland when I learned that Iceland Air offers a free stopover in Reykjavik on your way to Europe at no extra cost. I still haven’t taken advantage of the offer, but the video was tipping the scales.
But now, but NOW!!! I think I might just have to make Iceland my actual final destination. Our dear friend David just returned from an amazing visit there, and sent me this photo:
Have a closer look:
What the??!?!!
I love this in SO MANY WAYS. First off: why bubblegum, in all caps, and a different color? Second: why a giraffe?? Third: why 3D glasses???? And fourth: why does he want to kick ass?!??!?!?!?!? And fifth: can a giraffe kick ass and chew bubblegum at the same time???!?!?!?!?!!??!?!
I MUST FIND THE ANSWER TO THIS MYSTERY!!!!
AND THE ANSWER LIES IN ICELAND!!!!
REYKJAVIK HO!!!!
(Actually, I think I already know the answer to the fifth question, and it’s HELL YEAH.)

Hell yeah. Save me a seat!
I can actually explain the quote. But I fear that the explanation would be a let-down after this tantalizing mystery. Better to let it remain a mystery. And a giraffe.
Matt – In the words of the great Natalie Imbruglia (perhaps her only words) I AM TORN. TORN!! TORN!!!!!
It IS a tantalizing mystery. But aren’t mysteries most satisfying when they’re solved? Isn’t that why we love Sherlock Holmes? Or would it be more like that jerk on TV who revealed how all those magic tricks are done?
I’m afraid you’re going to have to spill the beans, Matt. We’ll just have to decide afterwards whether you’re Sherlock Holmes or the jerk.
DO TELL!
I have wanted to go for years!!! Leave the kids with Matthew and let’s go.
The giraffe in question is quoting the 1988 movie They Live. Apparently aliens have infiltrated human society, until some guy finds a pair of sunglasses that let him see the aliens for what they are.

Honestly though it was made more famous when the line was appropriated by the video game character Duke Nukem.
Clearly your friend here has poor taste in entertainment. But excellent taste in eyewear.
Matt – okay, I’m actually not disappointed. Because, how COULD I be???? I had no idea there were any movies starring Rowdy Roddy Piper, one of my faves from Saturday Night’s Main Event back in the day (yes! I used to watch pro wrestling! I was the victim of many a figure four leglock!)
And of course, there is still the mystique of the giraffe. And now the added mystique of They Live. It has been added to my Netflix cue.
And so I declare you a Sherlock and not a jerk. Thank you!
Matt: If it makes you feel any better, I still think you’re a jerk.
Mentally prepare yourself for They Live by searching Google images of Rowdy Roddy in his wrestling costume. It makes the movie slightly more ridiculous. My favorite scene is the knock down brawl he has with Keith David that goes on way too long to be comfortable. Its like they said – “Hey let’s stick with your strengths on this one. Can you pretend fight some dude in an alley for 15 minutes? You can. Awesome. Action!”.
OMG I CANNOT WAIT.
Robbi – Glad to hear you weren’t disappointed.
Matthew – Fair enough.
