I love the name August, and I wish it had been my idea to place it before “Swanson.” But no, I got the idea from my great-great grandfather and great-great grandmother Swanson, who must have been the ones to name my great grandfather August.
August Swanson.
Here is the elder August in 1925, the year (according to my grandma Mary, family genealogist) that he and his brother Martin went to Sweden to visit their two brothers Sven and Thelander, who had not come to live in the United States.
And here are the two Augusts, together for the first time.
I can only hope my son will have the bygone August’s kindly eyes, dignified stature, and truly magnificent mustache.

so glad you didn’t go with “Thelander” :)
Liz: Thelander was on the short list!
Liz: When Grandma Mary sent us this photo, she also applauded our choice not to go with “Thelander”. It was Grandpa Vince’s middle name, and he apparently hated it.
it made it to the short list – wow! btw – all this MATH you require is making my head hurt :)
I LOVE the name August, too. I had a great uncle August, and vowed that if I ever had a child born in the month of August, that the child would be named August. I thought that you had to be born in the same month you were named after. Once again, you have proven me wrong! It’s a great name! Why NOT use it anyway?! And so I’ve decided to go ahead and change both of my sons’ names to August. In fact, I think we will all of us, from now on, be called August. Four people, one name. I think it simplifies things.
