Lest you think that Chestertown is nothing more than a stretch of waterfront and a really nice bakery, I’ll have you know that really exciting things sometimes happen here. And really important people sometimes come here.

For example, the other night, we were invited out to a big fancy party (in fact, it was officially a “gala”) in a big fancy tent. It was a fundraiser to benefit the Sultana Projects, which, if you’re not aware, is a local nonprofit concerned with helping children learn about the amazing history, culture, and ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. In other words, the folks at Sultana are very much worthy of benefit.

To prepare ourselves, us boys got dressed up in our finest.

And, though somewhat reluctant, the ladies followed suit.

I wouldn’t say the result was quite Christmas card material, but neither were we wholly unpresentable. It’s just so seldom that our family and galas appear in the same sentence.

The really important and exciting people mentioned earlier were none other than the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Glenn himself was not there, being dead since 1944, but the current batch of musicians did a wonderful job, inspiring us all to forgo the buffet line in favor of the dance floor.

There’s something so wonderful about a wall of woodwind and brass.

Kato was in awe. He took it all in.

He checked to see if it was ok.

And then he shook his booty until the sun came up.

Ok, actually, he only shook it until 8:30pm, but it was a whole lot of dancing for a little guy.

The food was great, the mood was lively, and lots of money was raised for the Sultana folks. They raised more than enough to buy the new kitchen needed for the schooner Sultana, the boat that gives the organization its name.

And we were rewarded with three exhausted children who slept in at least a few minutes later than they otherwise would have Sunday morning.
