The things that are certain in life? Death, taxes, and Alden sleeping in until scraped from her bed by threats or inducements. She is her mother’s daughter, a champion sleeper, a lover of all things horizontal and unconscious.

Until this week. Yes, Alden is in countdown mode. At least three times an hour, she gives us the update on how many days remain until our departure for Alaska. With every day that passes, her excitement grows more intense and her hour of rising somewhat earlier. This morning, she got up at 5:45, a good two-and-a-half hours earlier than I would normally expect her.

Kato, her willing sidekick, who is already prone to early rising, joined her as she leapt into our bed with the latest countdown figures. We’re down to three days, if anyone else is counting.

No amount of persuasion could convince them of the merits of returning to bed, and so I stumbled into the other room for some lightly chaperoned puzzles…

…and books.

I’m not sure there’s any portable lesson here. Unless it’s don’t take your children to Alaska.

Or, if you must, don’t tell them about it until the morning of departure.
