In order to keep track of her own affairs, Robbi subscribes to Google Alerts, a service that lets her know every time her name pops up on the internet. On Saturday afternoon, she got a flurry of notices in the space of a few minutes. It seems that the details of our top secret publishing project have finally been revealed.
Yes, we are now at liberty to tell you that our very first commercial book is called The Super Hero Squad FLIPS OUT! It is a mix-and-match book (in the style of Ten Thousand Stories and After Everafter) published by LB Kids (a division of Little, Brown) in partnership with Disney and Marvel.
Here’s the cover:
The book recounts a series of adventures in the lives of the Super Hero Squad (a kinder, gentler version of the Marvel super heroes [Spider Man, Hulk, Thing, Thor, etc.]) and their ongoing disagreements with the Villains of Villainville (led by Dr. Doom). Because the Super Hero Squad is a kid-friendly series, the Heroes use their powers in slightly different ways than you might expect. For example: Wolverine only uses his claws for good (to cut cake and rescue kittens from trees, for example) and would never think of using them to actually hurt someone. In my favorite example of wit trumping brawn, Spider man makes fun of some giant robots who eventually cry and rust, at which point they are still villainous, but also immobile and ineffective.
The book consists of six illustrated stories, each of which is divided into three panels, for a total of 243 permutations. I think I won’t spoil your fun too much to tell you that in each and every one, the Villains of Villanville get their comeuppance.
We have been looking forward to telling you about the book for a long time, so we were excited when the Google Alerts came in.
One of the links led us to the page devoted to our book on the L.B. Kids site. We found out that the book will cost $14.95 in the US and $16.50 in Canada. I immediately made up my mind not to buy my copy in Canada.
Another one of the Alerts led us to the “About Author” page. Thus did we get to learn all about ourselves.
As far as we know, the book comes out “in the fall,” but one of yesterday’s Google alerts informed us that it can already be pre-ordered on Amazon for only $10.19. Apparently, the book is ranked 10,034,311 in terms of sales.
The early reviews must have been savage.
We’ll share more stories and photos of the process once the book is actually on the shelves, but for now, we just wanted to share our excitement. In case you missed it the first time around, here’s the New York Times piece about the project, in which, among other insights, our hidden superpowers are revealed.

What is the Target age range for this so that I can pre-order for the correct number of children for Christmas?
