Some of you have already noticed that Kato got a haircut. It was only his second. Matthew had gotten a trim a few days before, and Kato was intrigued. Also, Alden has been watching “Tangled” so there’s been a lot of talk of hair cutting anyway. Alden requested only one lock be trimmed, after which she recited some gobbledy gook (evidently from the movie) about the power of her hair. Kato made no particular demands, so we decided to go whole hog.

He was starting to look a little too Biebery, anyway.

We gave him a lemon to eat (at his request). It provided enough distraction that we were able to get out Matthew’s beard trimmers and start at it.
And so the cutting commenced.

Wowza. That was a pretty short setting to start with. Luckily it was on the back of his head – easy to work around. Once the lemon was gone, we needed another distraction – the whole process was taking much longer than intended, due to some clipper malfunctions. Enter every child’s favorite toy, the plastic bag.

It didn’t take long before Kato was disgusted. We thought it was maybe because his hair had gone from Biebery to Three Stoogey.

It turns out he was disgusted that we were the kind of irresponsible parents who would throw a plastic bag at him and tell him to play with it. And so we tried some other things. Scissors, then an iPhone. The iPhone, not surprisingly, did the trick.

And the scissors came into play once it became clear that beard trimmers are beard trimmers because they can’t handle a real head of hair. I tried to even things out a bit, but as everyone’s patience waned, it basically just became a rescue mission.

In the light in our kitchen, it looked like I did a pretty good job (time would tell that in pretty much any other light, it was a spotty at best) . Kato was fooled, anyway.

Good thing he can’t see that big shaved patch on the back of his head.
