Robbi and I have a long tradition of forgetting our anniversary. Occasionally one or the other of us will remember late in the day. Sometimes it doesn’t occur to us until a few days later. But it must have seemed appropriate to pay a bit more attention to the ten-year mark, because both of us remembered this time around.

For her part, Robbi wrote me a rather nice card. I will not share the contents, because they are rather private and  somewhat mushy.

My plans were a little more clandestine. I had arranged for our neighbors Donald and Ann to watch the kids for the night, and so around 4:30pm, I called our home line from my cell phone and pretended that Donald had just called, asking us to come over right away. The family marched across the street, at which point I explained to Robbi that the kids would be staying and we would be leaving.

And so we drove south. And then west across the bridge.

The sun was setting.

I did not tell Robbi what we were up to until we arrived at the Annapolis Mall. I presented Robbi with her options: Gravity 3D or Thor: The Dark World 3D.

Can you guess what Robbi picked?

Thor!

It was our first movie in months. We sat there for two full hours, enjoying the large screen, stadium seating, and high-quality speakers while the forces of good battled the forces of evil and we did absolutely nothing.

After the movie, we drove to Café Sado, an sushi/Thai restaurant on Kent Island.

The food was good. And plentiful.

Fried tofu.

Fried Tofu!

Rolls and more rolls.

Rolls!

Sea bass.

Sea bass!

And mango creme brulee.

Creme Brulee!

It was a wonderful evening spent in excellent company. In this way, not so different from the evening of November 8, 2003.

But unlike our wedding night when we stayed up late swimming with our friends in the surf off Tybee Island, this time I fell asleep on the ride back home (Robbi was driving).

It’s hard for an old man like me to have so much fun. I’m simply out of practice.
