As a general rule, I try not to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Or, rather, I forget Valentine’s Day is happening, and as a result I don’t remember to make/arrange for/do the appropriate love-inducing ritual until the day of, at which point it’s a scramble and totally lame anyway. But in this case (as in the case of our anniversary and birthdays) the deficiencies of my memory actually turn out to be a good thing, since Matthew is off the hook on the actual days of celebration and we therefore feel like it’s okay to “celebrate” on any other day of the year. Thus all of the ice cream consumption.

Today, however, I am celebrating Valentine’s Day with all of you, by sharing with you this fantastic love song by our good friend and collaborator Drew Bunting. He’s a hard-rocking priest, wielding a banjolin, no less:

The Valentine’s song “Kisses” is a brilliant combination of classic 80’s ballad, solid speed metal, grunge, teen spirit, and lyrics that will make you puke (in ways good and bad!). Please make sure to at least listen through to :46 for the real genius.

And then pass it on to everyone you love and hate. It just plain makes me laugh. Here’s a link to a version you can download for your iPod thingy.

Drew is the songwriter who asked us to write and illustrate the story that is included in his new album The New South, which we also sent out to subscribers as Volume 24. If you enjoyed Kisses, there isn’t much on the album like it, I’m afraid. But there are some classic tunes, one of my favorites being “I Want a Flava Flav”:

Have a listen, buy The New South for your love, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Or if you’re too cheap/poor to buy The New South for your love, Drew has graciously agreed to provide this free MP3 of I Want a Flava Flav (because that’s the kind of punk rocking death metal shredding preacher he is).
