The official publication date for Ten Thousand Stories is September 24, but since we’re going to be at SPX this weekend, we got special permission from our Chronicle publicist to start selling copies this weekend at the Small Press Expo. We know it hasn’t gone on sale anywhere else so far, so we will have the unique pleasure to be present for the very first sale. Which makes us wonder, who will that person be who buys the very first copy of the book? Will it be a loyal reader who has loved Ten Thousand Stories since buying a homemade copy from us back in the winter of 2006?

Or will it be someone we’ve never met before, someone whose eye is caught by that beautiful cover?

To help people understand the recent transition of Ten Thousand Stories from ugly duckling to queen of the prom (I’m speaking strictly of aesthetics, of course; it has always been a prom queen in our hearts), Robbi put together some signage for our table at SPX. Robbi was never trained as a designer, but I think she’s getting pretty good at putting together stacked type treatment signs. I’m particularly fond of her use of the Chronicle logo.

Back to the question of who will be the first to buy our book. If you would like it to be you, here’s what I suggest. Get to SPX early (the lines start to form around 10:30am, I believe) and, as soon as the doors open at 11:00, spring across the ballroom to table W80. We’ll be there waiting to sell you a copy and snap your photo. The likeness of that special person will be up on this blog on Sunday morning.

Provided we sell at least one copy, that is.

Wish us luck!
