It’s time to come clean. I may have slightly misrepresented my summer in Alaska to you fine people. Although it is true that in years past, I have been a mighty fisherman

…and although photos like this one might make you think that I am still in the heart of my fishing prime…

…the truth is, I did not catch the fish pictured above. The truth is, I did not catch a single fish this summer. This summer I was ignobly consigned to the humble rank of the tundra domestic.

What is the tundra domestic, you wonder? I will tell you. The tundra domestic is he who does the cooking.

And he who does the laundry.

And he who watches the kids.

Taking them to the tundra playground.

Exposing them to the thrills of the outhouse.

Teaching them about the wonders of nature.

Letting them drive heavy machinery.

Allowing them to jump recklessly from piles of scrap lumber.

And driving them here and there and back again.

The humbling truth is this: Robbi is the (far) better and (far) more experienced fisherman, so when it comes to dividing the tundra responsibilities, its clear where the chips fall.

I take care of the kids, and she brings home the sockeye.

But lest you think my new job will make me soft, think again. You can put the domestic in the tundra, but you can’t take the tundra out of the domestic. If you know what I mean.

I’m not sure I do.
