It is a dangerous thing for a person living in Maryland to admit, but I am a die-hard Duke basketball fan. Tonight was the biggest game of the season to date: the first match-up with the hated North Carolina Tar Heels.
I always take my Duke watching seriously, but when Carolina is in the house, it is a standing-room-only affair. Suddenly the big TV becomes not quite big enough.
The game started badly for my boys. Very badly. Carolina stormed out to an 8-0 lead. My mood was reflected in my body language.
Which went from bad to worse.
Duke trailed by 16 late in the first half, but somehow, improbably, chipped away at Carolina’s big lead and somehow, improbably, managed to pull off a victory.
I wish I could say that my family shared in my enthusiasm, but as the teams exchanged the requisite post-game handshake, I learned to my dismay that I was celebrating alone.
Even Alden, who had cheered beside me with such spirit throughout the miserable first half, was not on hand to savor the thrill of victory.
Maybe she’s a UNC fan?

The game was EPIC! No way is my granddaughter a UNC fan! She didn’t imprint on that Duke mobile for nothing. Ditto Kato. Robbi’s perverse alegiance to Wake is cause for concern, but the rest of the family is solid.
Perhaps your wife and children were SO confident in Duke that they didn’t feel the need to stay up and watch.
I notice that Alden has the remote control close at hand. Very alpha.
Ahem…I have a niece at UNC. Nuf said.
duke sucks.
Important context: “sk”‘s team, the University of Maryland, has lost to Duke twice already this year.
But they were so very gracious in defeat, lovable even.
we are just setting you up for a big time comeuppance in the ACC tourney. btw, jh is a heels fan if you would like to rub it in.
