It is a dangerous thing for a person living in Maryland to admit, but I am a die-hard Duke basketball fan. Tonight was the biggest game of the season to date: the first match-up with the hated North Carolina Tar Heels.

I always take my Duke watching seriously, but when Carolina is in the house, it is a standing-room-only affair. Suddenly the big TV becomes not quite big enough.

The game started badly for my boys. Very badly. Carolina stormed out to an 8-0 lead. My mood was reflected in my body language.

Which went from bad to worse.

Duke trailed by 16 late in the first half, but somehow, improbably, chipped away at Carolina’s big lead and somehow, improbably, managed to pull off a victory.

I wish I could say that my family shared in my enthusiasm, but as the teams exchanged the requisite post-game handshake, I learned to my dismay that I was celebrating alone.

Even Alden, who had cheered beside me with such spirit throughout the miserable first half, was not on hand to savor the thrill of victory.

Maybe she’s a UNC fan?
