We were at the playground the other day. Alden headed straight for the sand pit. We expected her to come back, but she didn’t, so we went over to see what she was doing.
As it turns out she was drawing.
“What are you drawing?” we asked.
“I’m drawing me,” she said.
And so she was.
I think you’ll admit, the likeness is uncanny.
But she was not done. The drawing continued.
A new figure emerged, rounder this time. Before we could ask, Alden told us that it was Kato.
Indeed.
For easy comparison, here is the genuine article.
“And what about August?” we asked.
“Just a minute,” she said with some impatience, offended that we had prompted her. She took out her stick and went back to work.
Appropriately, August’s portrait bears some anatomical resemblance to Kato’s (apparently, in Alden’s view, boys are round and girls are pointy) with the exception of being mouthless. Perhaps this is an artful representation of August’s current inability to speak?
August took a moment to behold his likeness, but if he had an opinion, he did not share it.
When the portrait session was concluded, we retreated to the swings for a different brand of fun.
Inspired by Alden, I am heading off to my desk now to sketch a bit. Tune in tomorrow morning for the next edition of Matthew Draws.

Perhaps her drawing girls as pointy is hereditary. After all, Robbi draws women with pointy boobs. :) Just a thought…
Matthew Draws? I’ll now have a reason to get out of bed tomorrow.
