On Friday Robbi got phone call from the art director of a magazine asking her if she was interested in illustrating the cover and lead article for the August issue. Of course, Robbi was interested. The problem: the illustrations are due in mid-July, but because Robbi is going to be in Alaska for the next month or so, she has to get them done before we leave.
So Robbi’s yesterday was devoted to mad scribbling.
And I got to spend Father’s Day as every father should—in full-bore child immersion.
We went to the playground for a while, which Kato really seemed to enjoy.
Alden has graduated to the “big-girl swings,” which she refuses to use in the traditional way.
Then we drove across the bridge to visit with our friends, the Westbrooks.
In addition to being excellent friends, the Westbrooks have a pool, which helps them graduate to the category of “really excellent friends.”
And that’s all I have for you this morning. We’re on the 48-hour countdown. Every moment is precious. My next task: going over to Bob’s house to saw up a log that fell from one of the trees. It is the unexpected calamities that always make leaving for Alaska such a delightful combination of sleeplessness and panic.

How can I say this nicely. You? Sawing a log? Take pictures, please. Or, rather, have someone else take pictures. And keep the children far, far away.
Hmmm. pictures of Matthew sawing logs…
Heh…this should be good.
And by “sawing logs,” we mean literally. Not the figuratively way – so no pictures of you snoring.
Don – don’t you know that I’M the expert on sawing figurative logs?
I LOVE Alden’s swing style! My kind of girl!
Don: I did not take pictures. Documenting the full extent of my dominance of that log would have been akin to bragging, a thing I try to avoid, lest those of you with less potent man-skills feel inadequate.
