Today we are heading to Iowa. Yes, Iowa. Perhaps you have not been to Iowa before. I have been to Iowa many times. I grew up in Kansas City, and we drove through Iowa on the way to visit my grandmother in Fremont, Nebraska.

Specifically, our destination is Des Moines, and even more specifically, Drake University, where we will have the privilege of leading various classes, meeting lots of students, and giving a public presentation. We will, of course, report on all these fronts.

But for now, I’m left contemplating Iowa. I must admit, it was never my destination, but always a means to an end. Now that Iowa is officially where I’m heading, I’m paying special attention to this little book that has been sitting on my desk for the last several years. It seems particularly appropriate to the task at hand.

I was wondering whether Iowa would be welcoming of people from Maryland. As it turns out, I have nothing to worry about!

What is there to do, in Iowa? I wondered. Beyond all the aforementioned Drake-related activities, I mean.

I’m not one for really long ropes, but I’m torn between the Chicken Mural and the Boot Museum.

And those of you who know me well are well aware of my soft spot for little things on prairies.

I’m only hoping that there’s time, between all the official business, for a little wandering.

Thanks to the very nice woman who sent me this brochure several years ago. I have been meaning to write you and tell you how much I like it, but I’m afraid I’ve lost the card you sent, which means I no longer know your name and email address and so cannot write to thank you. So thank you. I love this little book, and I’m looking very much forward to our trip to Iowa. If you happen to read this post, please identify yourself.

And if you happen to be in Des Moines right now, let’s meet at the Pirate Museum tomorrow night at 6:30. I’m looking forward to it.
