I have just arrived at my roadside motel in Palmyra, PA, in hopes of getting a good night’s sleep before a full day of meetings tomorrow. I brought my bag in from the car and went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. There, I was greeted with the lowest sink I have ever encountered. I’m not sure what the builder was thinking when it was installed.
Perhaps this was once a motel for the vertically challenged. Or maybe the low sink is a function of local custom. I am in Amish country. Regardless, I was able to bend down enough to get a bit of water on my toothbrush.
The underwhelming bathroom is not the only aspect of my room with which one might choose to find fault. But I’m generally not too hard to please when it comes to motel rooms, especially ones that only cost $49 a night. I’m tired, and there is a bed. I was forward-thinking enough to bring my own pillows, so I imagine I’ll be able to pass the next eight hours or so without too much trouble.
I just hope that if I need to get a drink of water in the middle of the night, I’m able to find the sink.

Oh dear. I applaud your frugality, but just looking at that picture gives me the eebie-scabies. But I have germ issues even in very posh hotel rooms. I blame it on childhood family vacations with my mother who would never let us walk on the hotel room carpet without shoes on, regardless of how nice the hotel was. Oh, and we were NEVER, under ANY circumstances, allowed to sit on or touch the bedspread. Ack, flashbacks…
So, yeah… Hope you have a great trip!
Matt! I live right next door to palmyra pa! How long are you in town? You’re welcome to stay with me, for free! And our sinks are normal height!! Call me 717-376-5583
Palmyra! You’re one town over from where I grew up! You must go to downtown Annville–a straight shot down Route 422, about fifteen minutes–and check out the Allen Theater and Coffeehouse, just past the intersection of Route 422 and Route 934. It’s a brilliantly renovated old theater that re-opened when I was twelve, and they tied the whole community together; they’ve also won all kinds of awards. Go see!
I bet the room came with free Internet! Unlike the palatial Marriott I stayed in last week where my only option would have been to pay $12.95/day for the privilege of plugging in a cable. Who travels with a cable?
Could that have been conceived as a bathroom for the wheelchair bound. I once had such a room in Geneva NY, but everything about it was spacious in addition to being low.
