My good friend Christian has my back. He knows I live in a place where fresh ginger costs an outrageous $3.99 a pound. And so, when we met up last weekend in NYC, he brought me a ten pound bag of my drug of choice.
I brought it home…
…pulled out my peeler…
…and got down to business.
Once the peeling was done, I summoned my assistant.
Notice his perfect technique.
He takes his work seriously.
He puts his backbone into the work.
The result: the nectar of gods.
Here’s what ten pounds of ginger looks like on the other end.
And here it is in its finished form, in a perfectly mixed volcano, the beverage that would put hair on my chest if such a thing were possible.
Here’s my volcano recipe for any who find themselves inspired.
Note that you will have to get your own assistant.

1. I think you’re missing out on an excellent business opportunity by mindlessly heeding the mollycoddling child labor laws in this namby-pamby country & failing to hire out your vulcanizing assistant.
2. Recipe looks interesting. How would you describe its taste profile (bearing in mind that if you respond “exactly as it sounds” you won’t have helped me one iota)?
3. Do you miss coffee at all?
4. Not even on chilly mornings?
Word.
Stu: the taste profile for the volcano falls under “horrible” or “fiery and disemboweling” or “burning with notes of unctuous ethanol.” I have found that the oregano oil is mostly to blame. My preferred use of the ginger is to make a delicious ginger soda: 1/8C lemon juice, 1/8C ginger juice, 1T honey + 1 1/2C seltzer water. SO TASTY.
Also: our assistant appears to be much more useful than he actually is. Currently hiring him out costs us more in overdraft fees than he is able to bring in.
Does Matthew concur w/ your assessment, Robbi? “‘Burning w/ notes of unctuous alcohol,’… but good!”
Stu: I refuse to dignify Robbi’s smear campaign with further negativity. The Volcano is, hands-down, the most spectacular beverage ever to grace human lips. This, in spite of the fact that it causes skin to peel from said lips. A straw is recommended.
