It’s hot here. It’s hot everywhere these days. I got my run in early today. It was just 73 degrees when I crossed the Chester River Bridge this morning, but the humidity was stifling. I stopped for a minute to catch my breath and watch the sculls on the water.
Robbi was supposed to go rowing this morning, but woke up feeling lousy and went back to bed. For whatever reason, this has been her toughest first trimester. But the pregnancy book promises that she’ll feel better soon.
I’m back in the barn, finding solace in the air conditioning. We’re headed for 100 again today. I took this photo at 5:00 yesterday evening, the first time I can remember seeing the car thermometer in triple digits in a long time.
We go to Alaska for many reasons, but one of the most compelling is the accompanying escape from the Maryland heat. Two weeks from today, we’ll be on the tundra—overcast, windy, and hovering in the high 50s. I just checked, and it’s 39 degrees right now in Egegik, the little native village across the river from where we fish.
More posts on what we’ll do there to come, but here’s a little something to get us all thinking of cooler climes.
I like to call it “The One that Didn’t Get Away.”

If you don’t want to get whacked with an oar, try “sculls” instead of “skulls” — those rowers can be fierce!
Virginia: I must have already been whacked in the head—hence the spelling woes. Thanks for the heads-up.
Yep, it’s a killer out there today. Mind if I hitch a ride to Alaska with you? My sister just got back from a week in Juneau and made it sound mighty lovely.
PS – and Remy too?
Now, that’s a fish!
Is it a salmon? Yum, must taste delish that fresh. Do you guys eat it sashimi style? Or cooked on a plank? All of the above?
