Lately, Robbi has been growing bean sprouts in a jar, our first little hydroponic experiment, inspired by my sister Lindsay, who has opened a micro-farm supply store on Cape Cod.
Kato has been observing their rapid growth with great interest.
And curiosity.
And fascination.
And exploratory zeal. He wondered if he’d like how it tasted. We wondered if he’d like how it tasted.
The verdict was clear.

I love you. And I love your entire family. But there’s something about sprouts that has always made me dislike them. This post, therefore, is my worst nightmare. Hugs!
Don: The rest of your nightmares must be pretty tame.
Any tips or how-tos you guys used to grow those sprouts, or did you get your intel and supplies from New Farm Store?
Saul – the sprouts are super easy – just let them soak in a glass jar for 8 hours or so. After that, rinse and drain them morning and night and otherwise let them sit in the jar out of sunlight (I put a towel over them). In about 4 days they’re mostly sprouted, and then I put them in the sun to green up for a day. Super easy and delicious! The trickiest part is remembering to rinse them twice a day.
NewFarm has these nice mesh plastic lids that go over the top of a standard mason jar to make the rinsing/draining part really easy, but I imagine you could accomplish the same thing with cheesecloth or something like that. They also carry the sprout seeds – we’re doing the organic “Sandwich Booster Mix” which is DELICIOUS. Unfortunately NewFarm doesn’t have a shop online yet, but I’m sure if you call or email, my sister/brother-in-law would be happy to mail order (lindsay@newfarmstore.com (774) 237-9363 )
Good Luck!
I am totally with Don (including the I love you part).
