August is the baby in the family. Certainly right now, but probably forever.

He’s constantly learning from his older siblings.

How to jump.

How to drive.

But in some ways, they are also learning from him.

In the wake of the incident above, Alden reported that, “It’s so, so fun to crawl,” clearly delighted by the discovery. I didn’t have the heart to remind her that she had mastered the concept long ago.

Perhaps inspired by his siblings’ willingness to sample his preferred mode of transportation, a few days ago, August decided to try theirs.

This surprising moment lasted about 15 seconds and has not been duplicated since. But it is a sign of things to come, and probably soon. The little guy turned 11 months a few days back. Alden and Kato both started walking at 13 months. Before long, “baby” will just mean “youngest.” Before long, this is going to be a house full of actual kids.

It’s a bit further off, but I’m looking forward to hearing what August has to say for himself. For the first two, it was when they started to speak that I really got a sense of who they are. I get glimpses of August. He has a knowing gaze (see photo above). He’s sweet and bold, joyful yet easily surprised.

But how will he describe his world? What will his voice sound like? Who will he be?
