The grand finale to our mysterious conference in Miami was an 80s-themed Ring-in-the-New Year party. We had been warned of this earlier, but since we packed in a pre-snowstorm panic (and since I didn’t think that anyone would actually come prepared for said party) I neglected to include anything that might be considered 80s Fab. So at the last minute (as is my wont) I threw together an ensemble that included my pajama top over my long sleeve tee (as my Jane Fonda-inspired fitness gear), the belt of my bikini suit (as my headband, buckle hidden below mop of hair), and my regular old jeans (pegged high on the calf, just in case no one noticed). I borrowed a stack of jelly bracelets and some blue eyeshadow and hair product to polish my look. I could have used some serious Aqua Net, but couldn’t find any this side of 1993.

Matthew’s costume was less-than-inspired (some pink stripes were in his shirt, and he tried very hard to keep the collar popped) but my new best friend Rachel (sorry Stella. Sorry Marigold. She was there for me when the photo booth was free…) totally stole the show with her Gozer the Gozerian glam (the link is awesome, with fanboy Kingpin’s play-by-play of meeting the actress who played Gozer). She was wearing a sparkly one-shouldered mini that was rad to the max, especially since she was frontman for the somewhat impromptu band. There’s something about the 80s that keeps you from taking yourself too seriously. Or that might be just me: it was definitely the decade that I was most mock-worthy (elementary-early high school).

Also: Matthew wants me to note that Rachel’s head isn’t actually that much bigger than mine. It was a perspective thing.
