Robbi and I have often struggled to define our work. Is it “satirical illustrated commentary on the human condition,” or is it “odd, commercially non-viable picture books for adults?” We’re not sure. We’re hoping that someone, someday will tell us what we’re making, in genre terms. Or maybe we should be happy that no existing handle quite defines us.

Today we got a nice piece of praise from Pulitzer Prize-winning book critic Michael Dirda of the Washington Post. We met him last fall at the Chestertown Book Festival, and he has been a subscriber ever since.

In a current Washington Post piece called Specialty Publishing, he mentions our work, describing it as “Witty, winsome, and original.” I can’t think of three adjectives I’d rather have associated with our work. If we can’t be characterized, we can at least be described.

We’re flattered and humbled. And really excited.

Here’s the full piece if you’re interested. He also mentions a bunch of other presses I’m eager to investigate.
