Banana Head

First of all, thanks to all of you for participating in yesterday’s excitement. I’m not sure we’ve ever gotten more comments on a single post, and the love on Facebook was just as generous. It makes our march a lot more fun when we’re able to share it with you, so thanks for checking in, for giving us encouragement, and for making this barn a little less lonely than it can sometimes be.

So what to write about on the day after a day of such intrigue? As is so often the case, Robbi has solved the problem without even meaning to.

For the last two nights, just as I’ve been drifting off to the far pastures, Robbi has asked me for drawing prompts. For the last two mornings, I’ve awakened to images in my inbox.

Two nights ago, I gave her “banana head.” (I may have been trying to insult her; I can’t remember now.)

Last night, I mumbled, “false teeth.”

Amazing what a girl can do with an iPad, stylus, and five minutes at the end of a long day.

More Drawings

Days keep passing and we keep doing drawings. More importantly, people keep sending us their drawings. Here are a few from the first four days. Keep in mind that the first four prompts were: envelope, monocle, paperweight, and ascot. With that in mind:

Here are some drawings from Brian.

And a few from David.

Fiona sent us this one all the way from Vancouver.

We were honored to have drawing from Holly, creator of the wonderful web comic League of Lost Causes.

Here is my monocle.

And here are some drawings from Neil.

And here are my paperweight and ascot.

I really wish I had a paper weight that said “Eat More Funnel Cakes.” And I’m really glad that I don’t wear an ascot.

Drawing in the New Year

It is 9:03am on January 1, and Robbi and I are already 1/365th of the way to accomplishing one of our goals for 2013.

As threatened, we are going to draw every day this year, using the book 712 More Things to Draw from Chronicle Books. We each have a copy.

Before breakfast—before anything—I took out my book and set to work, determined not to botch this resolution on day one.

Today’s prompt was “envelope.” I chose a worthy model.

And here’s my drawing. Robbi described it as “elegant.” Which might be shorthand for “awful.”

Moments later, Robbi jumped into the fray.

Her drawing is neither elegant nor awful. I like how it contains a hint of intrigue.

Noticing fun unfolding of which he was no part, Kato proclaimed his interest in drawing an envelope of his own.

Robbi declared it “magnificent,” which is way better than “elegant,” no?

Of course, the daily drawing is not a competition, but an exercise. A process. A project. An experiment. I have no idea what the coming year will bring, but I hope that it ends with a book full of drawings.

I know that a handful of you tracked down a copy of this book and are doing drawings of your own. If anyone has an envelope to share, feel free to send it my way.

Happy New Year, everyone.

Draw With Us

It is a well-documented fact that those of us in the barn enjoy drawing. Robbi likes it so much that she chose it as a profession. I am so fond of drawing that I do it in spite of having no talent. And Tilly (another artist by training and vocation) loves drawing so much that she came up with the idea for our five-minute drawing sessions.

Over in Bobbledy land, we’ve been enjoying posting weekly prompts for kids and seeing the wonderful drawings they come up with.

As fun as it is to draw by oneself, it’s even more fun to draw with other people. And so we’re wondering if some of you in Idiots’World might have a hankering to put pen to drawing pad as well. Here’s what we propose: a mass group drawing effort in the year ahead.

To give us structure (and to keep us all on the same page), we’re going to use a book from our friends at Chronicle as a guide. Called 712 More Things to Draw (the book is a follow-up to an earlier book called 642 Things to Draw), it is a “guided sketchbook.”

In addition to featuring an incredibly appealing giraffe, the cover is printed on a sturdy stock with a pleasing texture. You will enjoy holding this book.

The interior is a grid of drawing prompts. Simple perhaps, but pretty helpful, I think, when it comes to actually sticking to a drawing regimen.

Speaking of which, here’s the plan:

1) Anyone who is interested, should order a copy of the book.

2) Starting January 1, Robbi, Tilly, and I are going to start filling out our books, one drawing a day, every day of the year.

3) We’ll post our favorite drawings on the blog (we promise we won’t make you suffer through each and every one of them).

4) Any of you who feels like it can send us scans or photos of your drawings to post as well.

5) And that’s that.

Let’s all spend a year drawing stuff together, shall we?

In fact, at a drawing a day, the book will last us almost two years. But something about two years of daily drawings sounds a bit more intimidating. Let’s take it one year at a time and see what happens.

We’ve got our books:

Now go get yours.
